Couple finally get married in their 70s after having to call off their engagement years after the parents of the bride-to-be refused to give their consent

It was love at first sight – but marriage only came six decades later.

A couple who have recently married first got engaged six decades ago, only to have the parents of the bride-to-be refuse to give their consent to the marriage.

According to the Metro, Len Allbrighton, 79, and his 78-year-old wife Jeanette Steer, first got engaged after meeting in a hospital on the Isle of Wight. Unfortunately, Jeanette was under the age of consent at the time, which was 21, and so she needed her parents to agree to the marriage.  Unfortunately they refused and so the lovebirds had to separate, with Len making a life in Australia and Jeanette marrying another man and having a family.

The Metro reports that Len finally caught up with Jeanette 52 years later when he tracked her down following his divorce.  She was still married at the time and only reached back out to Len a few years later after the husband died from cancer.

Now the couple say they are very happy, with Jeanette describing married life as “fantastic” and Len saying that the pair “fell in love again”.
