Coveney: “I want to represent the man in the sleeping bag as well as those who get up early”

In what is becoming a tightly fought race, Simon Coveney is pulling back the early lead Leo Varadkar held at the start of the Fine Gael leadership race.

The Cork TD said last night at a hustings in Dublin that he wanted to represent the people in a sleeping bag as well as those who got up early and created jobs, a major dig at Varadkar’s ludicrous comment last week about being a Taoiseach for “people who get up early”.

The former Minister for Health was also accused of preparing for this race for over 12 months in advance, something he vehemently denied but you can tell is somewhat of a ” thou does protest too much “.

There’ll be another three hustings in the coming week with Fine Gael members getting their chance to hear all arguments and make their mind up.

The “all but over” race for Leo Varadkar last week seems very much alive and moving towards Simon Coveney at the end of this week.
