Coveney unveils plans to open three new emergency homeless shelters to be built in Dublin

The Minister for Housing Simon Coveney has revealed today that three new emergency homeless shelters will open in the coming weeks.

The welcome announcement was made earlier today when Mr Coveney was speaking about the Peter McVerry Trust strategic plan for housing for the homeless.

It is understood the new shelters will provide 220 beds for the city’s homeless, although the announcement was welcomed by many, some homeless charities have said the development will only slightly improve the situation as there are currently over 1800 adults and 2,012 children sleeping rough in the city.

Meanwhile Mr Coveney said: “The immediacy of the problem we face today requires an increase an emergency bed numbers in Dublin,” said Mr Coveney.”

“In many ways the fact that that is needed is a statement in itself and the more lasting solutions [to homelessness] are housing-based.”
