Christmas is effectively canceled across Ireland, as lights will be switched off on Christmas Eve, and restaurants, gastropubs, and other facilities are set to close until the middle of January at least.

The move follows a marked deterioration of the Covid-19 situation across the country, with over 900 new cases detected yesterday alone.

A new mutant strain is currently spreading around the world. This new strain, named VUI-202012/01, is up to 70% more transmissible.
