Covid-19: French media claims threats from French President Macron forced Boris Johnson to take more stringent coronavirus measures

French newspaper ‘Liberation’ has claimed that the country’s President Emmanuel Macron had threatened to close his country’s border with the UK on Friday if Prime Minister Boris Johnson failed to take more stringent measures to contain the Covid-19 outbreak.

The paper claims that the revelations came from sources in President Macron’s office and implies that these threats forced Prime Minister Johnson’s hand in ordering the closer of all pubs, restaurants, theatres, cinemas and gyms to shut their doors to slow the spread of the virus.

While Downing Street has made no official comment on the claim that threats from the French President brought about Prime Minister Johnson’s apparent about-face it does appear as if they had some effect on the UK Premier as his unexpected announcement of these measures surprised many.

It is claimed that European leaders were unhappy with Prime Minister Johnson’s response to the Covid-19 crisis who had not taken any stringent measures to slow the spread of the disease days after most other European countries had.
