COVID-19: Irish Prison Service is considering temporary release for some inmates




The Irish Prison Service have confirmed that they are currently in discussions with the Department of Justice over the temporary release of inmates in order to combat the spread of the Coronavirus.

According to RTÉ News, the prison service is looking to release 200 prisoners on a temporary basis.

It is understood the measure is being considered to alleviate overcrowding and combat the spread of the virus.

The Irish Prison Service say an outbreak could potentially put staff and vulnerable inmates at risk.

RTÉ News reports that the prison service are only considering inmates who are not a threat to public safety.
