Japan is to ban all foreign nationals from entering the country following the emergence of the mutant Omicron strain.
Many countries have now reimposed travel restrictions after the new strain was first detected in the South Africa region in recent days.
Scientists are warning that the new strain, which contains a number of mutations, might be able to evade current antibodies, so existing vaccines might be useless.
