A state of emergency has been declared in Tokyo and surrounding areas following a dramatic spike in coronavirus cases.
According to local authorities, case numbers are now at their highest since the start of the pandemic.
The state of emergency applies to Tokyo and the three neighboring prefectures of Chiba, Saitama, and Kanagawa. It will be in place from January 8 to February 2 at least.
