Covid comeback: Cabinet to pass new legislation to allow mandatory mask-wearing rules that could see new restrictions imposed on the Irish public at any time

The cabinet will pass new legislation that will allow the government to make mask wearing compulsory in certain situations.

The measure is described as precautionary and there are no requirements for the return of legally required face masks.

However, it is the first major step in the government’s Covid response in several months and comes at a time when the number of cases and hospitalizations is rising.

The cabinet is informed that the burden on hospitals from the virus has increased dramatically in recent weeks.

It’s understood however that no plans are in place at this time to introduce the new measures but that the government will have the power to impose such draconian measures on the Irish people once more.
