Today is the 170th anniversary of the tricolour being flown publicly down in Waterford City.
Thomas Francis Meagher raised the flag which eventually became the national flag at the Wolf Tone Confederate Club at 33 The Mall in Waterford on this date in 1848.
In April 1848, Meagher stated “The white in the centre signifies a lasting truce between Orange and Green and I trust that beneath its folds the hands of Irish Protestants and Irish Catholics may be clasped in generous and heroic brotherhood”.
The flag was next flown publicly outside the GPO in 1916 and eventually became the flag of the free State in 1922 and the national flag of Ireland in the Constitution in 1937.
The GPO Witness History Centre is currently holding an exhibition on the tricolour.
