A 69-year-old bicyclist was seriously injured in a garbage dispute in Edgewater, Chicago.
Chicago police said the victim was biking north in the 1000 block of West Hollywood Avenue when he stopped at a red light and saw a person in a car throw a small bag of food waste out of the street.
The cyclist picked up the bag, placed it on the car’s windshield, and cycled off on his bike. Although the man cannot remember what happened next, surveillance footage shows the passenger getting out of the car and hitting him on the head.
The victim fell headfirst beside the wheel of a jeep that had to drive around him.
The victim’s helmet was crushed when the jeep drove off and probably saved his life, according to police.
The man is in hospital, but his condition is stable, police said. It was not clear at first if the attacker was in custody or if the driver who hit him stopped and waited for police.
