De Gascun: HIQA research suggests that immunity from Covid-19 vaccines lasts about six months

The Director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory Dr Cillian de Gascun, has revealed that latest research from HIQA suggests that immunity from Covid-19 vaccines lasts six months.

Speaking to RTE’s Claire Byrne Live programme, de Gascun revealed that immunity could potentially last up until the autumn.

de Gascun who was speaking on the possibility of vaccine passports, said that although early signs on the effectiveness of vaccines are good it is not yet known how long they will last.

He also told the programme that the idea of vaccine passports are not uncommon and they are widely used in a number of countries for rare diseases such as yellow fever.

de Gascun said that it is likely that we will see some form of a vaccine passport especially given that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was recently discussing the idea.

However de Gascun warned that the idea of a vaccine passport should be more societal and be on a global scale where it benefits everyone but not just for those in upper and middle class who wish to travel abroad for reasons such as a holiday.
