
The death toll in the Portugal forest fire has now risen to 61.
Many of the victims perished inside their cars as they attempted to flee the inferno, which continues to burn across many areas.
Over 700 firefighters are battling the blaze, which was likely sparked by a lighting strike on Saturday. The firefighters’ work is being hampered by high temperatures, passing 40C during daytime.
Spain and other nations have offered help and sent firefighting equipment to the stricken area.
Portugal has now declared three days of mourning after the ‘biggest tragedy’ to have befallen the country in many years.
