Death toll rises to at least 215 in the aftermath of powerful Mexico earthquake

The death toll has risen to at least 215 in the aftermath of the 7.1-magnitude quake that struck Mexico yesterday.

The epicentre was pinpointed at Atencingo in Puebla state, around 75 miles south-east of Mexico City. The quake struck at 1.14pm local time, at a depth of 32 miles, according to the US Geological Survey.

The seismic movement has caused heavy damage to Mexico City, where almost 4m people have been left without power, and many buildings have toppled over.

At least 21 children died when a primary school building collapsed.

Coincidentally, the quake struck on the anniversary of the devastating 1985 temblor, which caused major damage to Mexico City, killing over 5,000 people.
