Decision on public services media funding, including for RTE, will be taken before summer, says Martin

Tánaiste Michael Martin has stated that a decision about the funding of public service media is expected to be made by the end of this summer, reports Breaking News.

According to Mr. Martin, it is “sensible” that the government is awaiting the results of two reviews on RTÉ administration that Minister for Culture Catherine Martin has commissioned.

He did, however, predict that in 2024 and 2025 the TV licence will probably continue to be a major source of income for the national broadcaster.

“The three party leaders are agreed with the minister that we do need to resolve this in terms of the model, but then it will take time, so the licence fee will be a significant revenue earner for RTÉ certainly in 2024, and I will even hazard a guess into 2025 until a new system has bedded down,” he told RTÉ Radio’s This Week programme, reports Breaking News.
