Deluded: Helen McEntee believes garda morale is high and applications will get strong candidates

Justice Minister Helen McEntee said she believed there would be a number of strong candidates vying for the post of Garda Assistant Commissioner before Thursday’s deadline.

Current Garda Assistant Commissioner Ann Marie McMahon had to postpone her retirement after a senior officer did not apply for the post.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Ms McEntee said: “This is a competition that’s still open. It doesn’t close until Thursday. It is an extremely important post for many reasons, as I’m sure people will appreciate, and I do hope between now and the end of the week that we will have as many applications as possible from within An Garda Síochána,” reports RTE.

She added: “I think we have excellent people working at various different levels within An Garda Síochána who would do an absolutely superb job within the role of Deputy Commissioner. The competition is still open, so I can’t say who may or may not apply between now and then, but obviously I anticipate that we will have some fantastic candidates,” reports RTE.

She acknowledged that there are some areas of concern that need to be addressed.

“There are issues that have been raised with me and there are specific issues that I have brought to the attention of colleagues and we now have a commitment from Government to review particular measures that are potentially impacting people coming forward,” reports RTE.
