The Department of the Environment have confirmed that they are conducting a review of the current concert licensing system in the wake of the controversy over the Garth Brooks concerts.

Leading figures such as Dublin Lord Mayor Christy Burke and Tanaiste Joan Burton have discussed the possibility of the concerts going ahead.

In a statement on Sunday evening , the Department of the Environment announced that they decided to conduct a review of the current concert licencing system within Ireland in the aftermath of the cancellation of the five Garth Brooks concerts.

Minister Alan Kelly released a statement were he said: “I am committed to a carrying out a wholesale review of the way major events are handled.”He said this would be progressed in the coming months, “as opposed to carrying it out in rushed manner that is in neither the interests of concert-goers, residents or the planning system in general”. “I believe this situation can only be solved by all the parties coming together in an atmosphere of calm and with all sides being flexible in their approach. Mr Kelly went on to say “If this happens, I would be optimistic that the common good and common sense will prevail as the distance between all parties is not insurmountable.”

Lord Mayor of Dublin Christy Burke has said he believes some progress has been made in reaching an agreement over the staging of the Garth Brooks concerts. Mr Burke also said talks were ongoing between the Department of the Environment and the City Manager, Owen Keegan.

Tánaiste Joan Burton has also released a brief statement in which she said there may be a window of possibility in reaching an agreement over the five performances.
