Direct provision migrant centre worker mocked over his English accent gets awarded €3,500 compensation

A worker at a direct care centre in Dublin who was mocked at work by colleagues because of her English accent has been awarded €3,500 in compensation, reports Breaking News.

The Workplace Relations Commission ruled that Coolbridge, a company that runs several direct provision and emergency accommodation centres in Dublin, discriminated against assistant general manager Chris Murray based on race.

No Coolbridge representative was present at the WRC hearing and the company was not legally represented.

Mr Murray argued that the company had breached employment equality laws by treating others less favourably than others in a comparable situation because of their race.

The WRC learned that he started working at the centre in July 2022, where he worked 12-hour shifts for €12 per hour, reports Breaking News.

Mr Murray explained that he was Irish, but due to his upbringing, he spoke with an English accent.

Mr Murray provided evidence to the WRC that this included notices on walls and in offices.

Although Murray raised the issue with his immediate supervisor, Murray said his supervisor did not discuss the issue with his colleagues and instead advised him “not to be offended,” reports Breaking News.
