Ibrahim Halawa’s verdict on his involvement in the Muslim brotherhood protests and conspiracy for murder has been found as not guilty.
In April, Halawa asked the then Taoiseach Enda Kenny to help free him from his prison in Cairo after his trial was postponed.
Then, Leo Varadkar is said to have spoken with Egyptian authorities about Halawa’s involvement. Meanwhile, Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney is said to be delighted with the verdict.
The Halawa family, who are of Egyptian origin but hold Irish passports, have been campaigning for some time for this release. They have vigorously lobbied Irish politicians to involve the Irish government.
It is now likely that Halawa will arrive in Ireland in the coming days.
21-yr-old Halawa was detained during Muslim Brotherhood protests in Cairo in 2013.
He was one of 400 people who were accused of conspiracy for murder.
