Enda Kenny was said to have “drink on him” by one onlooker who witnessed the Taoiseach making a smarmy remark about returning to Ireland to try and form a government.

Speaking at an event organised by the Irish Embassy in Washington, Kenny went through a list of events he was attending in the U.S. as part of his St Patrick’s Day visit.

Iincluded in the list was a breakfast with Vice President Joe Biden who claimed Kenny is “the most popular guy in the country but he still lost”, and that if Kenny ran for office in America, he’d get 80pc of the vote, and lunch with President Barack Obama on Capitol Hill.

Kenny said of his visit that it went well, and then disgracefully threw the Irish electorate’s decision out with this smarmy remark: “Bejaysus, I wish I didn’t have to go back and face what I have to face but c’est le vie”.

One Sinn Fein supporter said online about Kenny’s remarks:
“There’s no need to bring the Lord’s name into his usual smart alec statements. How dare he say he doesn’t want to come home and face the people’s decision. He should be ashamed of himself”, he said.
