Human Trafficking is rife in Donegal – gardai made raids in the city late yesterday in an effort to flee 5 Romanian men being kept as modern day “slaves” by an Eastern European man in his 40s.
Gardai were tipped off after one of the men managed to contact the Romanian Embassy. He said that the men, aged between 21 and 45 were forced to wash cars for free for up to 10 hours a day.
Garda Inspector Pat O’Donnell said the men were delighted to see officers arriving to free them and even hugged one of them.
Garda O’Donnell said it was basically “modern day slavery” and said he expected arrests to be made in follow-up operations.
Gardai have arrested a man in his 40s in connection to the incident.
