Gardai in Co Meath have launched an investigation after an elderly couple were tied up and left locked in a room overnight after a gang of ruthless thugs burgled their home.
It is understood the sickening incident which left the two pensioners requiring hospital treatment occurred Drumconrath, on Thursday night.
The two pensioners who are both aged in their 70s were left tied up for a number of hours as the burglars ransacked their home at approximatley 10:15pm on Thursday night.
It is believed the elderly pensioners were unable to call for assistance until they freed themselves the next morning.
Gardai say the thieves ransacked the pensioners home before they made off with a number of jewellery items, two mobile phones and a small quantity of cash.
They also say the elderly couple were taken to hospital for treatment where the man currently remains under observation.
