Local authorities have posted a ‘Do not swim’ warning on four Galway beaches due to the presence of pollutants in the water.
People are advised not to enter the water at Silver Strand, Salthill, Blackrock, or Grattan Road beaches after routine testing revealed the presence of enterococci bacteria.
This type of bacteria poses a serious health hazard as it can cause a number of infections.
The ban may be lifted during the weekend, but consult with local authorities before using the named beaches.
