Do you believe it? “Enhanced flu jab” may be more effective for over-65s, study claims

A HIQA research suggests that two types of improved flu vaccinations may be more effective than ordinary flu shots in reducing hospitalisation due to the flu or instances of the flu in individuals 65 years of age and older, reports RTE.

Higher dosages and other components are added to enhanced vaccinations to increase their efficacy.

However, the evaluation also revealed that, in comparison to normal flu shots, several of the improved vaccinations are linked to an increased risk of certain side effects, such as fever, headache, or injection site discomfort. Fortunately, these responses are often moderate and transient, reports RTE.

Additionally, it stated that there is a great deal of ambiguity around the cost of these vaccinations to the Health Service Executive and that the affordability of a switch would rely on how much it costs in comparison to a normal flu vaccine.

According to the Health Quality and Information Authority, both conventional and enhanced flu shots seldom cause major adverse effects and are typically safe and well-tolerated.

At the Department of Health’s request, HIQA conducted the evaluation in order to provide information to the Minister of Health on the funding of the HSE’s possible transition for this age group from a regular flu shot to an improved one, reports RTE.
