After a notable surge in support for Sinn Féin, bookmakers Ladbrokes have ranked the party as the frontrunner to win the most seats in the next general election.
Ladbrokes said that Sinn Féin’s strong backing also played a major role in Catherine Connolly’s success during the presidential election, with the party now topping the odds at 11/10, reports Breaking News.
Fianna Fáil, meanwhile, endured what several TDs described as a “disastrous” presidential election campaign, following Jim Gavin’s withdrawal from the race three weeks before polling day after a series of controversies.
Discontent has since grown within Fianna Fáil, with some members questioning Micheál Martin’s leadership and suggesting the Taoiseach has gone “past the natural sell-by date” of party leaders, reports Breaking News.
Fianna Fáil now trail behind Sinn Féin with odds of 7/4 to win the most seats in the upcoming election.
Fine Gael, who ran what bookmakers described as a subdued presidential campaign in contrast to the eventual winner, remain slightly behind in the race at 11/4, reports Breaking News.
Cal Gildart of Ladbrokes said: “There seems to be a shift in the popularity of the government parties. Sinn Féin are in a commanding position despite being so far out from another election. If they can maintain the momentum they have since the presidential election, we could see huge changes at the top of Irish politics,” reports Breaking News.
