Do you believe them? Met Eireann claims Ireland had warmest spring in 126 years

Spring 2025 has been recorded as the warmest in Ireland since Met Éireann began keeping records 126 years ago, reports RTE.

According to the forecaster’s Climate Statement for Spring 2025, it was the first time that spring temperatures exceeded the 20th-century average by more than two degrees.

The highest temperature of the season was observed in Athenry, Co Galway, where 25.9°C was recorded on 30 April, reports RTE.

Out of 25 monitored weather stations, 23 reported their warmest spring ever. Only Dunsany in Co Meath and Dublin Airport reported their second- and third-warmest springs, respectively.

Met Éireann noted that four of the five highest average spring temperatures ever documented have occurred since 2017, a pattern that aligns with the broader trend of seasonal warming due to climate change, reports RTE.

Many of the country’s weather stations also logged record levels of sunshine for the spring months of March, April, and May.

This spring was also the driest since 2020 and ranks as the 16th driest spring since rainfall records began in 1941, reports RTE.

Thanks to the calm, sunny, and warm conditions, a marine heatwave emerged along the west coast during April and May.

In some coastal regions, sea surface temperatures rose to more than 2°C above average, with offshore areas experiencing increases of up to 4°C above normal, reports RTE.
