Doherty says the Budget was just ‘spin’ from ‘serial wasters’

Pearse Doherty of Sinn Féin has called the Government “serial wasters” who treat people with “contempt” and rejected Budget 2025 as fluff, reports RTE.

Following Minister Jack Chambers’ and Paschal Donohoe’s budget addresses, the Donegal TD addressed the Dáil.

He stated that the Budget does not address these pressing concerns “because this Government is incapable of delivering real change” and cited some that include housing, childcare, and the health care system.

Mr. Doherty stated, “Your job is to get results, not to spend money,” reports RTE.

He claimed, nevertheless, that what people actually perceive “is a deepening housing crisis” for which “nobody takes responsibility”.

“Homeownership has collapsed under Fine Gael for young people,” he maintained, reports RTE.

He said that “we have children with autism being denied their constitutional right to education” in part because talented young people are being forced to leave the nation owing to a scarcity of housing, reports RTE.

These are a few of the fundamental requirements that are unfulfilled in Ireland, Mr. Doherty continued.

The youngsters “with scoliosis and spina bifida” are “the most glaring reminder” of government failure, he claimed.

In addition, he added that the government had “squandered five years” and that the general election will be used to evaluate them, reports RTE.

In addition, Mr Doherty charged that the government’s failure to raise housing objectives amounted to “raising a white flag.”

The Finance Spokesperson for the Labour Party declared that “Ireland of 2024 is a country of winners and losers” and demanded an immediate general election.

“Record Corporation Tax receipts, but record numbers of our citizens without a home,” according to Ged Nash, who also stated that “public services and creaking infrastructure that should shame us” exist despite “surpluses the envy of Europe,” reports RTE.

Money isn’t the issue after “ten years of continuous growth.” Mr. Nash stated, “Our nation and its people are being held back by a lack of creativity and vision.

“This country needs a change of direction and an election should be called now,” reports RTE.

The Budget, according to Social Democrats’ Finance Spokesperson Róisín Shortall, “has just one overriding purpose – self-preservation, of the Government parties”.

The Budget, according to Ms. Shortall, is full of “quick fixes instead of structural reforms”.

She claimed that this Budget “has all of the hallmarks of a Bertie Budget,” pointing out that Taoiseach Simon Harris recently welcomed former Fianna Fáil leader Bertie Ahern to Government facilities for a “fireside chat.”

“Spray money around, create a distraction, and hope that it’s enough to win an election,” reports RTE.

“It’s a bad deal – for the public and the State finances,” she stated, reports RTE.
