Man in his 80s recovering after being airlifted after fall near Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge

One of the most well-known tourist destinations in the North has seen a man saved by helicopter, reports Breaking News.

According to Coleraine Coastguard, the victim, who is said to be in his 80s, crossed the well-known rope bridge on Carrick-a-Rede island on the Antrim coast before slipping and injuring his leg.

Rescue crews were assigned to help the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service hoist the man off the island, according to officials, reports Breaking News.

Coleraine Coastguard said on Facebook, “The casualty had crossed the world-famous rope bridge onto the island, had slipped and fallen sustaining a suspected lower leg fracture.”

Utilising the Coast Guard rescue helicopter R199 out of Prestwick was the most secure method of evacuating the victim.

“In a delicate operation, the helicopter touched down on the precarious cliff top. The casualty was secured in our rope rescue stretcher and carried to the aircraft before being flown to a landing site at nearby Larrybane car park. The landing site was secured by additional Coastguard Officers. The casualty was transferred to a waiting ambulance,” reports Breaking News.
