Donegal Man says he attacked his wife with a rake to stop her going out shoplifting

A Donegal man who attacked his wife with a rake has claimed he only did it to stop her shoplifting in their local town, reports Breaking News.

A 20-year-old man appeared in Letterkenny District Court charged with breaching a section 8 restraining order and assault 33 of the Domestic Violence Act.

The man admitted that on Wednesday, August 30, just before 7 p.m., he arrived at the family home after drinking alcohol.

The unnamed suspect was arrested by police at an address in County Donegal.

He is accused of assaulting his wife and son as well as stealing €78 worth of alcohol from a shop, reports Breaking News.

After hearing the complaint, the man replied: “I did not swing the rake at my wife, I swung it at the car. I didn’t want her to go shoplifting,” reports Breaking News.

The woman has a history and multiple previous shoplifting convictions.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins said officers were opposed to bail for fear the accused would return to his family home.

The man’s wife testified that she feared for herself and the children if the man got drunk again.

She told Judge Ciaran Liddy: “I’m terrified. He has done this before. He got bail before and he still came back. I had to get a protection order for my own safety. He’s a different man when he’s not drinking alcohol. It’s not fair on me and the kids as they are going back to school,” reports Breaking News.
