“Don’t go near Dublin City Centre” – American tourists to Ireland urged to be aware of security

US citizens traveling to Ireland are being asked to “exercise good personal security” following a number of recently reported incidents, including a serious attack on an American tourist in Dublin last week, reports RTE.

Stephen Termini, who lives in Washington, was attacked in Store Street in Dublin on Wednesday.

The 57-year-old is being treated at Beaumont Hospital for serious injuries. The teenager has been charged in connection with the attack.

In a travel advisory issued yesterday, the US Embassy in Dublin cited “a number of recent incidents reported in the Irish media” and said travelers should protect valuables such as credit cards and passports and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

“The US Embassy Dublin encourages all citizens to be aware of their surroundings, especially when travelling in unfamiliar places, crowded locations, empty streets, or at night,” it said, reports RTE.

Yesterday, the Taoiseach said there needed to be a more visible garda presence on the streets, saying that “our cities kind of deteriorated during the pandemic period and have never really come back to the level of safety that they were”, reports RTE.

Speaking to RTÉ’s Today with Claire Byrne, Minister O’Gorman said the Department of Children’s Affairs is working closely with the Department of Justice on youth diversion programmes.

“These are regarded as being extremely successful in terms of diverting young people who may have some initial offenses … and away from subsequent reoffence,” reports RTE.
