Dr Tony Holohan has confirmed that he is taking time out from his commitments after his wife who was diagnosed with cancer was admitted to palliative care.
In an announcement made this evening Dr Holohan said he will be taking time out to spend time with his wife Emer and their three children.
Holohan also confirmed that Dr Ronan Glynn will take over his role as Chief Medical Officer in the immediate term.
It is understood that Holohan held a meeting with the Taoiseach Micheal Martin and the Department of Health earlier today.
