Dr Tony Holohan says Delta variant has enabled Covid-19 to regain a foothold in Ireland

The Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan has said that the Delta variant has enabled Covid-19 to regain a foothold in Ireland.

Speaking about the rise in cases over the past number of weeks, Dr Holohan said that there is a very higher level of the disease circulating in the community.

The Chief Medical Officer said that the spread of the virus is being watched closely with concern.

He went on to say that although the vast majority of the adult population is vaccinated against Covid-19, we have to remain cautious and allow these vaccines to build up the levels of protection that will allow us to reopen our society.

Dr Holohan also urged those who are not yet vaccinated to register for their vaccine as it will offer them greater protection as well as those around them.

He also urged the public and even those  who are vaccinated to continue practicing public health measures in order to limit the spread of the virus.
