Dreamer or just plain delusional? Having been in government for years and failed in providing housing, Varadkar says Ireland needs to build 40,000 homes every year

During the recent Fine Gael Ard Fheis, the Fine Gael party leader Leo Varadkar made a statement that has many younger people paying massive rents and unable to buy their first starter home scratching their heads.

Despite being in power for years, Fine Gael’s leader has just stated that ““owning our own home is in the DNA of us as a people” and that this “must again become a reality.
Varadkar went on to say a “target of 70 per cent homeownership by the end of the decade, could be achieved through public and private investment. This will require getting up to 40,000 new homes built every year” reports The Sun.

Given the track record of Fine Gael and their track record in housing, we’re wondering is there a general election in the air. That’s the only possible explanation we can come up with for Mr Varadkar to make such a fanciful political promise.
