Drinkaware warns that alcohol risks ‘don’t disappear the next morning’

Drinkaware has issued a warning to the public ahead of the upcoming bank holiday weekend, reminding people that the effects of alcohol consumption do not simply vanish the following morning after drinking.

The organisation is encouraging people to be mindful of their alcohol intake this weekend, with its chief executive, Dearbhla O’Brien, advising that anyone who needs to drive should plan ahead, reports Breaking News.

Speaking on Newstalk, she said: “Obviously, never drink and drive, even small amounts of alcohol affect your ability to drive,

“And the risks don’t disappear the next morning, so it’s really important that people are very cognizant of how much they’ve had to drink.

“If they’re planning on driving the next day, to know at what time they stopped, and to plan accordingly,” reports Breaking News.

Drinkaware noted that more than one-third of people would like to reduce their alcohol consumption.

The group’s research also found that a similar proportion had already made small adjustments to drink less over the past month, while more than 60% now feel comfortable choosing low or non-alcoholic drinks when out socialising, reports Breaking News.

The organisation said this shift reflects growing public awareness about how alcohol affects health and overall wellbeing.

O’Brien added that it is clear more people are turning towards low- or zero-alcohol alternatives, reports Breaking News.

“Our Drinkaware Barometer 24 found that 37 per cent of adults say they’d like to drink alcohol less often, and the same proportion have already made small changes to reduce their drinking in the past 30 days. Almost half of adults are open to a sober night out. That shows a real shift in attitudes and a growing awareness of the impact alcohol can have on,” reports Breaking News.
