Drive safely: Motorists urged to take extra care over the weekend as Storm Brian will bring widespread rainfall and strong winds

Motorists are being advised to take extra care on the roads this weekend and make extra time for their journeys as storm Brian brings heavy rain and winds to our island.

Met Eireann claims Ireland will get very heavy rain and strong wind throughout today and tomorrow with western areas expected to bare the brunt of the storm.

Although not as strong as Ophelia, Storm Brian will still see powerful winds of 130km warranting two separate weather warnings to be issued from the national weather service.

An orange wind warning has been placed on counties Galway, Mayo, Wexford, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Waterford with winds expected to reach 130kph.

Meanwhile the rest of the country is expected to receive less severe winds although they could still potentially reach 110kph.
