With an unusual heatwave expected to hit Ireland later this week, thousands are likely to flock to beaches and outdoor areas to enjoy the sunshine, reports The Mirror.

Met Éireann reports that today will feel increasingly muggy as temperatures climb to around 25°C. However, the real surge in heat is expected from Thursday onwards, as high pressure moves in, bringing dry, calm, and much hotter weather.

By Friday and Saturday, large parts of the country will experience widespread sunshine, with highs potentially reaching 28°C. The national weather service has cautioned that it will feel “very warm or even hot”, reports The Mirror.

As the country prepares for the heat, Gardaí have issued a firm reminder for people to follow public rules meant to ensure safety and fair use of shared spaces.

Over the weekend, Gardaí monitoring the busy Dollymount Beach area in Dublin witnessed alarming conduct from a few drivers. Two motorists were issued €150 fines for illegally occupying parking spots designated for people with disabilities, reports The Mirror.

This clear breach of regulations led to a strong warning from Gardaí, who emphasised that such behaviour will not be accepted.

The Gardaí posted about the incident on social media, pointing out the indifferent response of one motorist who allegedly said: “I’ll move when someone with a disabled permit wants to park,” reports The Mirror.

They reinforced the message that spaces marked for disabled parking are strictly for those carrying valid permits, and misuse will result in fines.

They said: “Gardai down at Dollymount Beach in Clontarf over the weekend issued both these drivers with fines for using the disabled parking bay without a permit. Please respect disabled parking bays,” reports The Mirror.

Parking in a disabled space without the correct permit is a legal offence. Those caught face a fixed fine of €150, which increases to €225 if not settled within 28 days.

Furthermore, as of January 1, 2023, using a disabled badge improperly incurs a penalty of €200, rising to €300 if not paid within 28 days.

Traffic wardens and Gardaí have the authority to check parking permits in order to combat abuse of the system, reports The Mirror.
