It is “clearly not doing what it was meant to do” when a system designed to lower the number of people brought before courts for possessing illegal substances like cannabis is in place, reports Breaking News.
According to Department of Justice data, adult warnings for cannabis possession during the previous three years were far outnumbered by court actions.
The data also reveals that, in three of Ireland’s four Garda areas, the number of charges for possession of banned substances has increased over the previous five years, reports Breaking News.
The number of minors facing possession charges for controlled substances has also increased, rising from 53 in 2017 to 120 in 2023.
In spite of an adult caution programme designed to reduce the number of persons prosecuted for possessing a restricted substance, over 17,000 persons were charged or summoned in the last three years for possession of cannabis or cannabis resin, reports Breaking News.
