The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sports Shane Ross has revealed today that Ireland should consider holding the Olympic Games at some point in the future.
Mr Ross who today backed the formal application for Ireland to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup has said the state should aim big and host major sporting events including the Olympics in the coming years ahead.
Speaking before the Oireachtas today Mr Ross said if Ireland’s Rugby World Cup bid was successful it would be logical to think we could host the Olympic Games further down the line.
Mr Ross said: “We’re now thinking in these terms and it’s really very, very exciting. Let’s think about the Olympics. Sure.”
“Now it’s a realistic prospect if we build up these stadiums and we are a credible bidder, which we obviously are, and if we win this bid I think the sky’s the limit.”
Meanwhile World Rugby will decide this November if either Ireland, France or South Africa will host the 2023 World Cup.
