Dublin city apartment complex residents face stark choice: Find €4m by the end of the week or be evacuated from your homes

Such is the plight that hundreds of residents in Longboat Quay apartments on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay in Dublin 2 find themselves in. Owners are now facing having to fork out between €9,300 to €18,000 each, depending on the size of their apartment. The complex contains some 299 units.

The stark revelations were made at a residents’ meeting held last night. Up to 100 residents attended the gathering.

Dublin Fire Brigade have twice in the last six weeks threatened to apply for a fire safety notice unless extensive remedial works to make the complex safe are carried out immediately.

It is understood that a tender for such works has been accepted, but it is unclear where the funding for such works will come from.

Longboat Quay was built eight years ago by former developer Bernard McNamara, who is now bankrupt. Some of the units had a price tag of over half a million euro.

However, recent inspections revealed serious shortcomings in the structure, such as walls that would not adequately contain fire and missing smoke vents.
