A 22-yr-old man, Darragh O’Brien, appeared before Dublin District Court today, facing charges related to a serious assault on an English tourist in Temple Bar earlier this month, reports RTE.

O’Brien, who doesn’t have a fixed address, was remanded in custody with consent to bail. He must provide an address and sign on daily at Blanchardstown Garda Station.

Arrested yesterday afternoon, O’Brien was charged with Section 3 assault causing harm in the early hours of this morning. He remained silent after being cautioned, reports RTE.

Judge Monika Leech heard from Garda Colin Kyne-Delaney of Pearse Street Garda Station. Kyne-Delaney reported that the injured tourist is still in critical condition at Beaumont Hospital, where he is in an induced coma.

According to Kyne-Delaney, the tourist had left a premises in Temple Bar early on August 21st and engaged in a verbal altercation before the assault allegedly occurred.

Emergency services were called around 12:30 a.m., and the tourist was treated at the scene. Initially, he was taken to St. James’s Hospital but was later transferred to Beaumont Hospital due to the severity of his injuries, reports RTE.

Kyne-Delaney stated that O’Brien was willing to bail on the condition that he signs on daily at Blanchardstown Garda Station and avoids the Dublin 2 area. Additionally, he must refrain from any contact with the injured party.

However, the court learned that he was no longer welcome at an address he had addressed to the gardaí. He expressed his willingness to adhere to these stringent conditions only if an address was provided, reports RTE.

Mr. O’Brien’s solicitor, Holly Laher, stated that she had consulted her client, who she mentioned was currently couch surfing with friends.

He had no prior criminal convictions and was a resident of the State.

Laher argued that homelessness should not be a barrier to bail, reports RTE.

After hearing the evidence, Judge Leech acknowledged the gravity of the case.

She granted bail to the accused with the consent of the prosecution and scheduled his next appearance before Cloverhill District Court for Friday at 11:30 a.m.

Gardaí at Pearse Street are still seeking witnesses to the incident, reports RTE.
