Dublin man (39) gets jailed for sending explicit Snapchat messages

A man was sentenced to two years in prison for using Snapchat to send over 100 adolescent girls sexually inappropriate messages and images, reports RTE.

In April 2022, Mark Fitzgerald, 39, of Dublin’s St Mark’s Drive, Clondalkin, entered a guilty plea to five charges of utilising technology to enable a child’s sexual exploitation.

Detective Garda According to Gemma Casserly, the prosecutor, Kate Egan BL, Fitzgerald turned himself in to the Ronanstown Garda Station in May 2022 and admitted to using Snapchat to communicate with girls between the ages of 12 and 19, reports RTE.

He said that his relationship terminated because his ex-partner had discovered the content while browsing through his phone.

Fitzgerald informed the gardaí that the females he was corresponding with were getting closer to 12 or 14 years old over the course of the preceding 18 months. He said that while he had never met these females, he was exchanging images of his genital area with them, reports RTE.

He admitted to the gardaí that he had added random ladies on Snapchat when he put it up and had no idea where the girls were from.

Fitzgerald gave his phone and PIN to him, reports RTE.

The Gardaí were able to take up the matter after requesting that Snapchat retain the content.

In April 2022, Fitzgerald had 1,490 interactions on Snapchat, which were examined, reports RTE.

Fitzgerald was accused by the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court of starting 136 separate discussions with minors during this time. Women 17 years of age and older, who are legally permitted to share graphic photographs, were part in the remaining talks.

Despite the fact that no photographs could be recovered due to the nature of the Snapchat program, Fitzgerald’s interactions were examined by the gardaí, reports RTE.

The court was informed that he would message females to request a picture and their age. Then, using more sexualised terminology, he would tell them they were beautiful and want to see them wearing more skimpy attire.

Fitzgerald allegedly encouraged the females to lift their skirts to reveal their knickers or snap pictures of their genitalia, offering to email pictures of them, reports RTE.

In messages, he would often ask the females how old they were, and when one of them enquired about his age, he replied that he was twenty.

Fitzgerald later admitted to sending inappropriate messages to young females and sending images of his genital area in a voluntary interview with the Gardaí in 2024, reports RTE.

He said that he should not have been asking them for photos of their faces, bodies, and genital areas.

According to Fitzgerald, he would first request pictures of the girl’s face and then search for further pictures as the conversation went on, reports RTE.

He promised to give them Snapchat photos of his penis. He told the gardaí that he is now going to counselling because he doesn’t feel the need to have sex with any of the girls.

Fitzgerald informed the gardaí that because of this transgression, his family would not permit him to see his nieces, reports RTE.

Det Gda In support of his claim that Fitzgerald was not suspected when he visited the Ronanstown Garda Station and that he helped the inquiry by giving his phone number and PIN, Casserly concurred with Brian Storan BL.

It was also acknowledged that gardaí had no more information about the female participants in the talks and could only determine their age based on their message content, reports RTE.
