Dublin Taxi Driver sentenced to 4 years in jail after he sexually assaulted young woman in his taxi when she fell asleep

A 60-yr-old Dublin taxi driver has been sentenced to 4 years in jail after he sexually assaulted a young woman who fell asleep in his tax on a Christmas night out.

Gerard Gunnery Snr from WhiteHall in Dublin became aggressive with the woman when she woke up in the front seat of his taxi being sexually assaulted. He grabbed the young woman and threw her out of his taxi, but she managed to take a photo of his taxi plate and gardai tracked him down.

According to RTE, initially Gunnery denied the charges and said that the woman said “go for it” but changed his plea to guilty some time later.

The woman said that an innocent girls night out turned into a nightmare. RTE reports that the woman pondered on whether she did anything wrong herself.

However Judge Karen O’Connor told that woman that what happened wasn’t her fault and said that Gunnery was guilty of a massive breach of trust as a taxi driver.

The Judge said those who hold public service licences had special responsibilities and sentenced Gunnery to 4 and a half years in jail with the final six months suspended.
