Dublin teenager (18) accused of one punch attack leaving man with bleed on the brain

A young man has been released on bail after an alleged “random” single punch attack left the man in critical condition in Dublin, reports The Mirror.

Scott Cahill, 18, of St James’ Road, Walkinstown, Dublin 12, was charged with assault causing damage.

The alleged victim, 48, was left with brain bleeding and “life-changing injuries” after the incident in Cook Street, Dublin 8, on Wednesday evening.

Mr Cahill appeared before Judge Maire Connelly at Dublin County Court today and faced opposition on bail. Garda Detective Mark Dennehy noted the seriousness of the case and expressed concern about witness tampering.

Garda Detective Dennehy claimed that as Cahill walked past the man, he “believed he [the man] took a dislike to him by the way the injured party was looking at him,” reports The Mirror.

The court heard Mr Cahill took his backpack and threw it against a tree, and when the man tried to retrieve it he was punched and knocked to the ground.

An ambulance took him to St James’s Hospital, but he left before being treated and went to the South Circular Road, where he passed out.

Judge Connelly heard that the man had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and fractured his skull. He was taken to Beaumont Hospital for emergency surgery and remains in critical condition in intensive care.

Garda Detective Dennehy believed that more serious charges would be filed and the case would be referred to a higher level of prosecution.

He said, “A member of the public was randomly assaulted in what appears to be a completely unprovoked assault”. Detective Garda Dennehy said the prognosis was “not good”, and the man was “left with life-changing injuries even if his condition improves”, reports The Mirror.
