After hitting, kicking, and yanking a mother’s hair during a school run, a lady attacked her sister-in-law at a Dublin post office with her fingernails, a court has heard, reports Breaking News.
On November 10, 2022, Claire Redmond, 25, of Forestwood Avenue, Santry, Dublin 9, entered a guilty plea to counts of assault causing hurt to two women: her neighbour on February 10 of the same year, and another woman at the Post Office on Ballymun Road.
Judge Treasa Kelly of Dublin District Court decided not to spare Redmond a conviction and postponed sentencing until a probation report and a reparation plan were ready, reports Breaking News.
Garda Sergeant Derek Spain, the court presenter, explained the facts to the judge, stating that the first event occurred.
Before attacking, she uttered the slur many times. Redmond kicked the woman in the head and stomach as she slid to the ground, reports Breaking News.
The victim suffered wounds, blood, and bruises when the accused hit her while grabbing her by the hair.
They had gotten along well as children, but Redmond had a mental breakdown at the time, the court was told.
Judge Kelly observed that the victim, who is now deceased, was in a troubled condition and experiencing anxiety as a result of the occurrence, reports Breaking News.
Nine months later, the post office was the scene of the second attack. The accused informed Redmond’s sister-in-law that she would be “waiting outside” after tapping her shoulder when she was already waiting.
The court heard she crossed to the other side of the post office before saying, “F**k it, I’ll do it here.” She grabbed the woman’s face with her fingernails, punched her, and kneed her in the face while holding her by the hair, reports Breaking News.
After crossing to the opposite side of the post office, the court heard her say, “F**k it, I’ll do it here.” Holding the woman by the hair, she struck her, kneed her in the face, and grasped her face with her fingernails.
“Get off her, get off her,” shouted bystanders, and it wasn’t until two post office employees stepped in and pulled Redmond away that the attack ceased, reports Breaking News.
Judge Kelly noted that the neighbour had since died, and the defence claimed that Redmond had made amends with her sister-in-law. However, victim impact statements were not provided, despite the Gardaà obtaining CCTV footage.
Despite having no past convictions, Redmond was granted the Probation of Offenders Act last year after using derogatory, abusive, and threatening language in court, reports Breaking News.
He begged for compassion, explaining that his client had been placed in hostels when she was younger after being kicked out of her parental home.
She started abusing drugs and alcohol, including cocaine and tablets, reports Breaking News.
Redmond went back to Ballymun around the time of the attacks in an attempt to re-enter her family’s house, but “things escalated”.
Mr. Broderick said that Redmond was unable to control her emotions following a relapse and that the attacks were not planned, reports Breaking News.
The lawyer underlined that she was driven and that she wanted to repair her life, go to Australia, and learn to become an addiction therapist now that she was well.
He produced documents attesting to Redmond’s completion of a 20-week residential treatment program that included anger management instruction, reports Breaking News.
The judge was informed that she had not used drugs or alcohol for 17 months.
Redmond, who remained silent in court, was placed on continued bail after being informed that her case will return in April, reports Breaking News.
