Dublin Zoo is reducing ticket prices on Friday to mark Endangered Species Day, reports The Mirror.

Since about 1500, over 800 species have become extinct due to human activity, and around a million are now estimated to be endangered.

The zoo staff believe that raising awareness of biodiversity and conservation is a step towards harmony between humans and nature.

So they are preparing to spend this weekend teaching children and adults alike how people can help protect animals and their habitats.

A spokesperson for Dublin Zoo said: “Endangered Species Day is a day for learning about wildlife, how to protect them and their habitats and the importance of saving species from extinction for our ecosystems. Visitors will have a chance to learn about the importance of supporting biodiversity, conservation and animal welfare while enjoying the family fun activities taking place. Over the course of the weekend (from 11am–4pm), Dublin Zoo will have plenty of educational and fun-filled activities for all ages, including special keeper talks, arts and crafts, and face painting,” reports The Mirror.

The charity, which first opened its doors to the public in 1831, is now involved in 30 international conservation programs for endangered animals, including giraffes, chimpanzees, rhinos, gorillas, elephants, orangutans and penguins.

They added: “Dublin Zoo aims to become a national focal point for species conservation in Ireland, and with over €1.25 million spent on conservation and research since 2009, working with conservation partners across 20 countries, Dublin Zoo has helped support the conservation of over 30 species in the wild,” reports The Mirror.

Visitors can get 25 per cent off the ticket price this Saturday and Sunday 20 and 21 May by booking online at www.dublinzoo.ie.

The discount cannot be obtained at the cash desk.
