Eamon Ryan delighted as Bus Eireann want to spend €30 million taxpayer money on electric charges for buses

Bus Éireann will spend €30m to install electric bus chargers in regional cities.

The Irish Examiner reports that by 2035, the Transport Authority intends to create a group of companies to supply, install and maintain dedicated electric vehicle chargers for buses, reports Breaking News.

The state-owned company currently operates 11 electric vehicles in Athlone, Co. Westmeath, which make up all urban transport, and three hydrogen-powered vehicles on Dublin’s commuter routes.

Regardless, Galway’s services consist entirely of hybrid buses. A further 20 hybrid vehicles are in service in Limerick ahead of a planned €3 million plan to fully electrify the city’s depot ahead of the delivery of 20 double-decker electric buses to the city’s routes, reports Breaking News.

The Athlone service is currently powered by nine dual electric chargers at the city’s depot, with a further 12 such chargers in Limerick.

It is not clear how many chargers will be provided by the tender’s $30 million budget.

“We are currently at the planning stage for the electrification of our other depots and the total number of chargers in each site has yet to be determined. Bus Éireann is committed to reducing its energy consumption and emissions by 50% by 2030 in line with the 2021 climate action plan”, a Bus Éireann spokesperson said, reports Breaking News.
