The proposed 20 cent levy on single-use coffee cups is aimed at so-called sustainability issues, but in fact it’s just another tax on the average Joe.
The Green Party tax measure was announced earlier this year by the Government as part of the Circular Economy Bill, aimed at reducing waste and influencing people’s behaviour.
It’s understood that the Minister of State Ossian Smyth thinks the tax is designed to wean people off single use containers and move to reusable keep cups.
However some retail experts believe that instead of doing its intended purpose, people could actually move to plastic cups – something deemed worse for the environment than the current status quo.
Either way, it would appear that it’s just another one of Eamon Ryan’s hairbrained ideas.
