Election 2016: Labour party try to buy their way to re-election by promising they’ll cut student fees by €500

The Labour has claimed they will fully commit to cutting student fees by €500 if they are re-elected to government in just under 3 weeks time.

The promise comes as part of a range of new proposals for higher education reforms, which include providing 100,000 free part time education places.

However many still remain sceptical of the parties promise due to the fact they made a similar promise during the 2011 election campaign but performed a complete u-turn and subsequently increased student fees to a whopping €3,000 a year once they came into office.

Speaking recently the Tánaiste Joan Burton claimed that the same scenario would not happen again and it only occurred in 2011 because the resources were not available at the time to fund the cost of third level education.

Ms Burton told reporters: “I would certainly hope that as resources become available we’ll be able to provide more resources into our third level system in Ireland.” “To make college an experience again that everyone who wants to go to college and qualifies to go to college will be in a position to do that.”
