“IRA past”, “Incoherent”, “Too old”, “Bad history” – just some of the expressions being thrown loosely around on social media today about Gerry Adams, and Sinn Fein supporters are firmly pointing the finger of blame at the 67-yr-old Sinn Fein leader.
The Louth TD looks likely to retain his seat, but up until early exit polls this morning, it’s still not clear whether he’ll manage to take in running mate Imelda Munster.
That’s the least of his problems. Supporters aren’t happy. Sinn Fein was running at close to 20% in the polls just three weeks ago, but after a number of what were described as dismal debate performances by the party leader, the party’s support dropped to 18%, 15% and now it looks like it will be around 14.5% today.
There have already been calls for the Sinn Fein leader to step aside after the election.
One Cork Sinn Fein supporter tweeted:
“Gerry Adams it’s time to go. We should be up to 20% today but your debate performances have cost us badly. #weak #timetogo”
