Election promises are as ephemeral as fireworks. Designed to ensnare the gullible and to feed the decision bias of the diehard followers, they are brief figments of a politician’s imagination, never meant to last beyond the threshold of victory.
Nevertheless, Enda Kenny has promised to cut the Universal Social Charge (USC) for those on the higher end of the earnings scale, if Fine Gael is bestowed the baton of power again at the next election.
Talking about the USC issue, the Taoiseach said “We have made adjustments to the lower rate and adjustments in other areas, to the increase in the minimum wage.
“The cost of the reduction for a further 1% to 4.5% will be about €250m.
“That leaves plenty of leeway in respect of other possibilities for investment given the progress that the economy is making.”
